Digital Shepherding: Pastoral Theology and Ministry in a Digital Age

In its sixth year as an annual symposium-style gathering of theologians and other scholars around the topics of digital communication and social media, Theocom has addressed themes such as: Theology and Communication in Dialogue (2012), Changing Models of Communications in the Church (2013), Community in the Digital World (2014), and Religious and Theological Authority in a Digital World (2015) and In the World and Yet Not of the World: Ecclesiology in the Digital Age (2016). This year's theme explores pastoral theology and ministry in a digital age.

  • What does it mean to be pastoral or to do ministry in a digital culture or context? How do the terms, "pastoral ministry" and "moral theology" find new meaning or expression today?
  • What are some generative examples from Scripture or Tradition that have most potential for ministry in a digital communication culture or age?
  • What are some new contexts for ministry in the digital age? Who are those left wounded by the side of the road on the digital highways and byways?
  • What methods or approaches to ministry may be most salient for digital culture?
  • How should we approach ministerial education and formation in our digital culture?
  • What might moral theology add to our understanding of ministry in the digital culture?
